Mutual Bank President William Morse named Chairman of the Board of Directors of School on Wheels of Massachusetts
WHITMAN AND BROCKTON, MA, Issued February 17, 2009 - William Morse, President of Mutual Bank, has been named Chairman of the Board of Directors of School on Wheels of Massachusetts, an organization that provides tutoring and other services to students affected by homelessness.
In this role, he will help guide the organization's growth and policies; and in his volunteer capacity, he also serves the organization as a tutor.
School on Wheels of Massachusetts (www.schoolonwheels.org) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help break the cycle of poverty one child at a time by providing academic support services. The organization was founded in 2004 by Easton, MA resident Cheryl Opper, who had been inspired by a story in Family Circle magazine about a retired school teacher, Agnes Stevens, who began a tutoring program in California for homeless children in 1993. The Massachusetts program is the third in the United States; the others are located in Southern California and in Indianapolis.
Currently School on Wheels provides one-on-one tutoring for school age children at The David Jon Louison Family Center in Brockton, The Evelyn House in Stoughton, The Conway House in Middleboro, Family Life Transition Center in Brockton, Help for Abused Women and Children (HAWC) in Salem and The Inn Transition and The Inn Between in Peabody. Nationally, there are more than 1 million homeless children and approximately 10,500 families per year in Massachusetts become homeless.
In addition to his work with School on Wheels of Massachusetts, Morse serves on the Board of Directors of the Metro South Chamber of Commerce.
A resident of Easton, Morse is a member of the Bankers Mutual Resource and serves as Treasurer and Director of the Goddard Health Foundation. He has served on the Easton School Committee and is the former Chairman of MASSFIT (Massasoit/Financial Institutions Training) a collaborative of area community banks and colleges offering training programs to those in the banking industry. Morse is also the former Chairman of Massasoit Community College's Board of Trustees and is a member of the Stonehill College Executive Committee for Development.
