Mutual Bank underwrites Whitman Library early literacy station
WHITMAN, MA, ISSUED AUGUST 3, 2009… Mutual Bank, a community bank with nine branches throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and on Cape Cod recently contributed $1,000 toward the purchase of an Early Childhood Literary Station at the Whitman Public Library.
The self-contained computer station offers children and families the chance to explore and learn from a wide variety of educational titles in an imaginative, intuitive and encouraging environment. Users can hear and see what programs are available simply by moving a cursor over an icon.
This computer station is geared toward children ages 2 to 9, and helps them learn language, math, science and a variety of other subjects in a relaxed setting. Programs include Sesame Street, First Steps; Encarta Kids; USA Explorer; Microsoft Paint; Math Blaster; Krazy ArtRoom; and SpongeBob Square Pants Typing.
Library Director Jennifer Inglis and Children's Librarian Joanne Warren said that the program is very popular with their younger patrons. "Purchases of this nature are outside the library budget, and we greatly appreciate Mutual Bank's efforts to help," said Jennifer Inglis. She added, "Community partnerships such as t his one demonstrate to town leaders, parents, and kids that local businesses recognize the importance of reading."
Eileen Casey, Branch Manager of Mutual Bank's Whitman headquarters, said, "The Whitman Public Library is a great asset to our town, and we are very pleased to have the chance to help fund their Early Childhood Literary Station. We all appreciate the key role that the library plays in the educational and social development of our town's children and are glad to support this very worthwhile effort."
